Dichotomous Key

 

  1. Cones & Needles – Bin 1
  2. Leaf/Flower – Bin 2, Bin 3, Bin 4
    1. Lack of Petals – Bin 4
    2. Has Petals – Bin 2, Bin 3
      1. 4 Petals – Bin 2
      2. 6 Petals – Bin 3

 

At first this was a little confusing, I was thinking of the project in a really complicated way.  I then realized it could be thought of in a simple manner as a process of elimination. A little thought in organization and classification was important but being really technical was not (in this case).

    Yep, as easy as that. You want to either use numbers or letters. The second choice of the first couplet should lead you to another choice, so depending on your labelling it could be 3 or really it should be 2. Since you have 1 and 1′, then under 2 you would have 2. lacks petals -> bin 4, and 2′ has petals -> 3, under 3 you would have 4 petals -> bin 2, and 3′ 6 petals -> bin 3.
