Fabaceae <\/strong>(legume family):<\/strong> Big-leaved Lupine <\/strong>Lupinus polyphyllus<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Habitat: open areas such as fields, slopes, along the road and other disturbed areas; doesn\u2019t seem to require rich soil but grows tallest when it has plenty of sun and some moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inflorescence is an upright stalk (raceme) which is a few inches above the first leaves which are petiolate and palmately compound with over ten leaflets each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fruits are dehiscent pods, hairy on the outside with over half a dozen seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 10 stamens: 5 with long filaments, 5 with shorter filaments<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5 purple or blue petals, fused into two connate petals and one unique petal that arcs over the stamens (how do the pollinators get inside?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2 sepals<\/p>\n\n\n\n carpel, marginal placentation (attached on outer edge)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Onagraceae <\/strong>(evening primrose family)<\/strong>: Fireweed <\/strong>Chamaenerion angustifolium<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Habitat: open areas, especially disturbed areas after glaciation or fire<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inflorescence: upright spike (raceme)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leaves are linear with a prominent central vein and indistinct secondary veins that are connected with each other toward the distal margin; petiole is greatly reduced<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fruits are dehiscent capsules with seeds too many to count; released with fuzz on them<\/p>\n\n\n\n 8 stamens<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4 bright pink petals<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4 darker pink (magenta) sepals,<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1 carpel, axillary placentation (attached at central column) Rosaceae (rose family): Thimbleberry<\/strong> Rubus parviflorus<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Habitat: Roadside, upland of beaches and lakes<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inflorescence: single flowers in a loose cluster at end of a stem<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leaves are palmately lobed and soft to the touch<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fruits are aggregate<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5 white petals<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5 green and rusty red sepals: stamens appear fused to sepals so adnation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dozens of stamens which encircle dozens of carpels<\/p>\n\n\n\n Indehiscent<\/p>\n\n\n\n Placentation: ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Number of seeds: ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Campanulaceae<\/strong> (harebell family): Harebell <\/strong>Campanula rotundifolia<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Habitat: uplands of beach in full sun, rocky soil<\/p>\n\n\n\n Inflorescence: single violet or periwinkle flowers, connation in petals<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leaves: narrow, linear, single main vein<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fruits: not evident yet but is said to be a \u201cnodding capsule.\u201d (Love that!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5 sepals<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5 stamens<\/p>\n\n\n\n appears to be a single carpel, but I am not sure<\/p>\n\n\n\n seeds are not yet evident, nor is placentation<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" https:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/user\/1736632438475456998 Make dissections of specimens from four different plant families.
